AIRCAT® tools have been tested & shown to operate at 82-86 dBa (decibels), far below the OSHA guidelines. This feature benefits not only the mechanic but also the overall business. AIRCAT®:
AIRCAT® impact wrenches are built with a Twin Hammer Mechanism.
The Twin Hammer design: The hammer slides and rotates on a shaft. A spring holds it in the downward position. Between the hammer and the driving shaft is a steel ball on a ramp. When the input shaft rotates ahead of the hammer with enough torque, the spring is compressed and the hammer slides backwards. On the bottom of the hammer and the top of the anvil are dog teeth designed for high impacts.
When the tool is used, the hammer rotates until its dog teeth contact the teeth on the anvil stopping the hammer from rotating. The input shaft continues to turn causing the ramp to lift the steel ball, lifting the hammer assembly until the dog teeth no longer engage the anvil and the hammer is free to spin again. The hammer then springs forward to the bottom of the ball ramp and is accelerated by the input shaft until the dog teeth contact the anvil again and delivering the impact.
The process then repeats delivering blows every time the teeth meet – typically twice per revolution.
NITROCAT®:
NITROCAT® impact wrenches are built with extreme torque applications in mind.
The 1355-XL and 1375-XL incorporate the Twin Hammer mechanism with a 15% larger rotor and cylinder than other industry models.
The extreme torque 1200-K incorporates the Twin Clutch design: The hammer is fixed directly onto the input shaft with a pair of pins acting as clutches. When the hammer rotates past the anvil, a ball ramp pushes the pins outwards against a spring extending them to hit the anvil and deliver the impact. After impact, the pins release and spring back into the hammer. The balls “fall off” the other side of the ramp at the instant the hammer hits.
The ramp need only have one peak around the shaft and the engagement of the hammer with the anvil is not based on a number of teeth between them. This design allows the hammer to accelerate for a full revolution before contacting the anvil giving it more time to accelerate and deliver a stronger impact.

Piston Compressor
The compression process is achieved through the motion of Pistons. The resulting friction creates heat. Therefore, Piston Compressors require resting/cooling periods and heat dissipation. The Duty Cycle is 70%.
Applications: Any use that is less than a 70% Duty Cycle. For example, tools that are run sporadically with frequent stops and starts. Examples would be impact wrenches, drivers and many tools found in mechanical shops.
Pros: Lower Cost
Cons: Inconsistent Air Output (70% Duty Cycle), Operational Heat, Noise
Rotary Screw Compressor
The compression process of Rotary Screws is a continuous sweeping motion. There is very little pulsation or surging of flow, as occurs with Piston compressors, resulting in a 100% Duty Cycle and a large volume of consistent air flow. There is also less heat due to less internal friction and less operational noise.
Applications: Any use requiring more than a 75% duty cycle. For example, tools that run almost continually without frequent stops and starts. Examples would be polishers, grinders and many tools found in body shops.
